One simple way to kick fear in the butt

Have you ever had a goal that lit you on fire?

The kind where you eat, sleep and breathe it? Consume it as it consumes you? You feel energized..happy…as elated as a woman who walks into a Kate Spade store and notices a ‘50% off’ sign plastered on the front window.

And have you ever noticed how different it is to take action from this inspired place vs. the “cross-it-off-my-list” place?

I experienced this the first time I created and posted (eek!) a video of myself online. It was a challenge from a business gal and even though I had wanted to do this for some time, this felt different.

I felt so connected to my passion beneath the goal. It was effortless to create. I actually loved the process and I was oblivious to my fear of being on camera! Instead of focusing on who would be watching the video later (or judging, according to my inner critic), I was connected to my ‘why’. It was the 2mm shift I need to go from having an idea to taking action on that idea.

There is always a bigger “why” behind your dreams and goals. Your great dreams are often pointing you to your purpose in life, the real reason you get out of bed in the morning.  The question is, are you exploring that?

What would be different for you if you connected with your bigger “Why”?  Think about the dreams you’ve been holding secret, close to your heart, and ask yourself:

  • What about this dream excites me?
  • How will I feel after I achieve it?
  • Why do I want this? What impact do I want to have with this in the world?

Answering these questions can help you get underneath the just-do-it-surface and into the magical space where your goals pull you into action.  No more pushing.  No more forcing.  Just sheer gliding and momentum.  Imagine that!

Simon Sinek says, “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.”.

And the bridge between the two is knowing your why.

This week, allow your thoughts to move in the direction of your dreams and reconnect with your “why”.

You are meant to live into your dream. You deserve it.

And then I’d love to hear from you – what helps you move from ‘idea land’ to ‘action land’ in an effortless way?

Honestly my biggest hold back is time! When I get a block of time to go to my office I often feel a sense of freedom to take the steps I need to take!

Leverage those moments Sarah! Feeling ‘freedom’ can be a great why!

I absolutely love this post! What a great reminder that when you focus on what you love doing, nothing else matters. I definitely agree that fear fades the moment you are working on something you’re truly passionate about. When I am struggling myself with fear, I always try and remember “fake it till you make it” and if I can convince myself that I am not afraid, that always helps me.

HAHA, this line: “As elated as a woman who walks into a Kate Spade store and notices a ‘50% off’ sign plastered on the front window.” <— Are you describing me?

When I'm writing copy for a client and it starts to feel hard, I like visualizing myself in a state of creativity and how I feel. Sometimes visualizing a feeling helps me GET there. 🙂

Ahh the power of visualization! What a great tool Janine – powerful and quick. Especially if you can FEEL your way into it…your brain will release the right chemicals (in your case, the ones for creativity) and your body will respond in that same way – instant change of state of being! NIce one.
